https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1336

This paper explores a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the interrelation of anxiety and motivation in second language learning processes. The researcher proposes the Affective-Cognitive Mediation Framework (ACMF) and offers an explanation of the previously disjointed concepts by arguing that both anxiety and motivation function as processes within a system that operates over multiple time scales rather than a singular, fixed, and defined entity. Drawing from Dynamic Systems Theory, sociocultural theory, and some branches of educational psychology, our framework reveals four primary mediating mechanisms: attention control, identity change, emotion evaluation, and social identification. Unlike traditional models that treat anxiety fundamentally as an inertial element of motivation, the ACMF describes certain anxiety forms that may, under specific conditions, serve as catalysts for motivational redirection. This approach provides an explanation for the contradictory evidence across the literature and forecast outcomes such as differences in individual responses to challenges in language learning based on their emotions. The researcher argues further that this framework explains the lack of productivity in many studies by providing hypotheses about the value of well-defined interventions and changes in the theory guiding pedagogy. Moreover, this study contributes to the existing literature by providing a clear conceptual framework that integrates what is already known and offers novel insights into the emotional aspects of second language acquisition.
Erizar Erizar

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1344

This study investigates the phonological challenges encountered by multilingual learners in Medan during the process of second language acquisition (SLA), with a specific focus on English as the target language. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Generative Phonology and Optimality Theory (OT), this research analyzes the influence of the learners' first and second languages—predominantly Bahasa Indonesia and regional languages such as Batak and Minangkabau—on their English phonological output. Focusing on voiced and voiceless consonants, the study identifies common patterns of interference, including devoicing, fronting, and stopping. Data were collected from ten participants aged 7 to 15 years through a reading task comprising English words containing target consonants. The findings revealed systematic deviations, such as /ʃ/ → /s/, /z/ → /s/, /v/ → /f/, and /θ/ → /t/, reflecting the influence of native phonological rules on English pronunciation. The study applies Generative Phonology and Optimality Theory to analyze these patterns, offering insights into the processes underlying the interference. Results demonstrate that the learners simplify or substitute challenging sounds based on their linguistic background, highlighting the impact of native phonological systems. The study concludes that both universal markedness and language-specific constraints play crucial roles in shaping L2 phonology in a multilingual context. Implications for pronunciation teaching and curriculum design are also discussed, emphasizing the need for context-sensitive pedagogical strategies in multilingual regions like Medan.
Dedy Suhery, Mutiara Zein, Zahratul Idami, Krisna Weny, Nidiya Mawarni

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1335

The widespread use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT among university students has introduced new challenges to academic integrity, particularly in the form of hallucinated citations: fabricated references that appear plausible but cannot be verified. This study investigates the effectiveness of a targeted instructional intervention in improving students' ability to identify and correct such false citations. A total of 139 students applied to participate through online recruitment; 50 were selected, 34 attended the training, and 27 completed both pre- and post-tests. The intervention consisted of a three-hour online session conducted via Zoom, where students were trained in responsible AI use, APA 7th citation formatting, and reference verification techniques. Pre- and post-tests required students to write short literature reviews using AI tools, and their submissions were assessed based on four indicators: the number of hallucinated sources, non-journal citations, reputable journal references, and APA formatting errors. Results revealed a significant reduction in fabricated and low-quality references, along with an increase in the use of reputable sources and improved citation formatting. These findings align with previous research emphasizing the risks of uncritical AI use and the importance of digital literacy education. The study concludes that targeted training is an effective method for mitigating citation hallucinations and enhancing students’ academic writing skills. The research highlights the necessity of integrating AI literacy into academic curricula to ensure ethical and effective engagement with emerging technologies in higher education.
Hendi Pratama

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1345

This study investigates the implementation of politeness strategies within Facebook comment sections, guided by Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987). As digital communication continues to thrive, Facebook serves as a prominent space where individuals from diverse backgrounds engage in conversations about social, political, and cultural issues. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research examines how Indonesian users articulate their thoughts in response to controversial or debate-inducing public posts. The data comprise selected Facebook comments containing relevant opinions, emotional expressions, and language use. Employing pragmatic and discourse analysis, the research uncovers the presence of four politeness strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record, and bald on-record. These strategies represent various communication goals—from fostering solidarity to delivering critique. The analysis reveals that while many users strive to uphold politeness to maintain social balance, others opt for more straightforward or ironic expressions that defy conventional etiquette. Overall, this research underscores how language use in digital spaces mirrors broader cultural values, interpersonal dynamics, and user behavior, highlighting the importance of polite interaction in sustaining healthy online discourse.
Sholihatul Hamidah Daulay, Nurul Husna , Sabilla Ayu Andini

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1347

This study explores how environment and sustainability issues are represented in the social media discourse of Mulawarman University's student organizations. Using Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Framework combined with an ecolinguistics approach, three Instagram posts were analyzed. The findings reveal that ecological terms and active language position humans as responsible agents for protecting nature, while nature is often portrayed as passive. Visual elements complement the textual messages to strengthen emotional engagement. The posts mainly function as awareness campaigns, referencing national policies but offering limited community perspectives. Socially, the discourse reflects conservationist and eco-modernist ideologies, focusing on institutional solutions. The study concludes that although Mulawarman University's digital environmental discourse successfully initiates meaningful conversations on ecological awareness, it remains symbolic. Future efforts should incorporate community perspectives and foster transformative ecological narratives for more profound societal impact.
Desy Rusmawaty, Maharani Illiyyin Zahra, Fahdah Fathinah, Yunita Maharani Azzahra

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1348

This study investigates the representation and significance of nature in James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Prairie" through the lens of ecocriticism. Cooper’s narrative profoundly portrays the American wilderness, reflecting on humanity's complex relationship with the natural environment during the period of westward expansion. Employing an ecocritical framework, the analysis explores how Cooper delineates nature not merely as a backdrop but as an active, dynamic character that influences human actions and decisions. "The Prairie" vividly captures the grandeur and vastness of the American frontier, underscoring the simultaneous beauty and harshness of the natural world. Cooper uses detailed descriptions of landscapes and wildlife to illustrate nature’s autonomy, challenging the anthropocentric perspectives prevalent in early 19th-century American literature. The study further highlights the ecological consciousness present within the novel, revealing how Cooper anticipates contemporary environmental concerns by critiquing humanity's destructive exploitation of natural resources and disregard for ecological balance. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the role of the protagonist, Natty Bumppo, whose harmonious coexistence with nature provides a counter-narrative to exploitative attitudes. Bumppo embodies environmental ethics ahead of his time, advocating respect, stewardship, and coexistence. Ultimately, this ecocritical exploration of "The Prairie" demonstrates Cooper’s novel as an early literary call for environmental awareness, significantly contributing to discussions on the human-nature relationship. By reassessing Cooper’s ecological vision, the study underscores the continued relevance of his environmental perspectives and highlights literature’s enduring role in shaping ecological consciousness.
Riyatno Riyatno, M. https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1357

This study explores the linguistic and cultural dynamics of graffiti in the public space of Gelora Satria Stadium (GOR Satria Purwokerto), Indonesia, focusing on language mixing as a means of social identity expression. Data were collected through direct onsite photographic documentation of graffiti and scribbles in the area, adhering to established linguistic landscape methodologies that prioritize authentic visual data collection. A qualitative analysis was conducted to examine textual and visual elements, categorizing instances of language use, mixing patterns, and identity indicators. Drawing on Landry and Bourhis’s (1997) theoretical framework, which differentiates the symbolic and informational functions of language in public spaces, this study interprets graffiti as a complex linguistic landscape where language choices reflect sociocultural meanings and community belonging. The findings reveal a rich interplay of local Indonesian, regional slang, and global English influences within the graffiti, demonstrating a dual identity that bridges local cultural roots and global popular culture. Notably, local affiliations are expressed through terms like “Viking Independent Crebond” and “PWG,” signaling community pride and regional belonging. Simultaneously, references to global cultural icons such as “X-Man” and “Anti-Hero” illustrate the writers’ engagement with wider cultural narratives. This blending of languages and cultural references underscores graffiti’s symbolic function as a medium for asserting both individual and collective identities in a contested public space. Ultimately, this research highlights graffiti at Gelora Satria Stadium as an active site of cultural expression and identity negotiation, emphasizing the role of linguistic landscapes in urban settings as platforms where language transcends communication to become a tool for social meaning-making and resistance.
Mellysa Dwi Rossita, Ulyati Retno Sari

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1349

This study examines public judgment of Indonesia’s proposed selective 12% VAT increase on luxury goods, announced by President Prabowo Subianto, through an appraisal analysis of YouTube comments. Employing a qualitative approach that integrates Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with Appraisal Theory, the research focuses on the Judgment subsystem—specifically Social Esteem (ability, persistence, normality) and Social Sanction (honesty and ethical conduct)—to explore how netizens evaluate government policy. By analyzing these online reactions, the study reveals the moral and evaluative dimensions that shape public perceptions of fiscal decisions.

Findings indicate that language in political discourse functions as a key tool for expressing social and ethical judgments. The comments reflect polarized attitudes toward the policy, demonstrating steadfastness in both support and opposition. The critiques frequently question the government’s capacity to implement effective reforms and challenge deviations from perceived social norms. Additionally, propriety judgments dominate discussions on the fairness of taxing the middle class while allegedly favoring the wealthy. This analysis highlights that public responses to political decisions are embedded in moral evaluations of truthfulness, competence, fairness, and ethical conduct. Negative judgments arise primarily from perceived mismatches between government actions and public expectations.
Amanda Rizqi Wulan Dari, Fuad Arif Fudiyartanto, Ari Wulandari

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1350

This research analyzes social opinions made through the medium of online comments on Israel's military attacks on Gaza's hospitals, observed on Al Jazeera news website's comment pages. Based on a qualitative descriptive analysis and Appraisal Theory, specifically the Judgment dimension this study seeks to demystify internet users' judgment and opinion on the matter. The analysis yielded 84 instances of judgment that fell into the Social Esteem and Social Sanction categories. Under Social Esteem, 13 comments were identified and grouped under Capacity (12) and Tenacity (1). Conversely, Social Sanction was more evident with 71 comments comprising Veracity (17) and Propriety (54). The latter category was utilized largely to evaluate both Israel's and Hamas's actions against established social norms and sanctions. The results suggest that public communication is not merely evaluative but also shaped by underlying theological ideologies and personal beliefs. Most internet users situate their comments within religious or ideological frameworks, thereby deciding their evaluation of the conflict. The paper underlines the intricate relationship among language, ideology, and public opinion in online discussion, revealing how virtual communities frame and express opinions about contentious geopolitical conflicts.
Ibnu Hudzaifah Hanief

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1351

This study focuses on the Indonesian translation of the Qur’an, specifically examining how interpersonal metaphors of modality—particularly obligation—are realized within the text. Utilizing Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), and more precisely the theory of grammatical metaphor, this research investigates the linguistic mechanisms by which obligation is conveyed in the translated Qur’anic clauses. The study aims to (1) describe the metaphorical realizations of obligation in the Qur’anic translation, and (2) explain their communicative functions and intended meanings.

Conducted within a qualitative paradigm, the data consists of clauses containing obligation-type modality, analyzed using Halliday’s interpersonal metaphor framework (2014). The findings reveal that obligation is often expressed through nominalization and verbalization. In other words, meanings associated with obligation (such as harus (must), bisa (can), boleh (may) are represented in the form of nouns or verbs. Some examples include : tidak ada kewajiban bagimu (“there is no obligation upon you”), and diwajibkan atasmu (“it is made obligatory upon you”). These expressions demonstrate high obligation values and show how modality is metaphorically encoded. Besides, a verbalization of the Islamic terms like halal and haram is also commonly found as modulation metaphors, as seen in the verbs like diharamkan and dihalalkan.
Arif Budiman, Khristianto Khristianto, Putri Khaleida Zahra

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1311

This study explores the gender inequality in Taylor Swift’s song and music video “The Man” through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist theory, particularly her concept of woman as the “Other” articulated in The Second Sex. Utilizing a qualitative and feminist approach, this research examines how Swift’s lyrics and video on song entitled “The Man”, critiques societal double standards, sexual objectification, and the gendered limitations imposed on women in both public and private spheres. The study analyzes specific scenes from the music video and key lyrics to illustrate how patriarchal norms continue to define and constrain female agency. By embodying a male persona, Swift challenges traditional gender norms and exposes the privileges accorded to masculinity, demonstrating how societal power structures favor men in contexts of ambition, sexuality, and recognition. The analysis reveals that Swift’s artistic expression serves as both a critique and a form of resistance against patriarchal narratives that marginalize women's achievements and subjectivities. The song and video act as cultural texts that reflect and resist the ideological reproduction of gender inequality in contemporary society. This research contributes to the broader discourse on feminist cultural criticism by demonstrating how popular music can function as a medium for articulating gendered experiences and advocating for social change.
Rafita Prasetya Ningsih, Krisna Sujiwa

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1322

The study investigated code-mixing and code-switching phenomena in the Indonesian movie The Architecture of Love, finding and analyzing the types, functions, and social dynamics. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study, with documentation as a data collection technique. The dialogues were manually transcribed from the film, containing code-mixing and code-switching, using the subtitles as a reference. The result analysis showed 60 data points of code-mixing, insertion was the most dominant type of code-mixing (75.44%), while of the 53 data points of code-switching, inter-sentential switching was the most frequent type (53.85%). These results indicated that speakers prefer inserting English elements within Indonesian structures and shifting between sentences across languages. Furthermore, the analysis identified social functions of 113 data points of code-mixing and code-switching, finding that the expressive function occupied the highest position (41.6%). The expressive function appeared most frequently, showing that emotional expression and personal attitudes play a significant role in character interaction. Regarding social dynamics, the study highlighted solidarity as the dominant relational aspect, followed by power and social distance. This study contributed to understanding how language mixing practices in Indonesian film represent social interaction in multilingual contexts. https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1324

This research sets out to examine the various types of shifts and the causal factors that appear in the subtitles of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) film. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study draws on Catford’s (1995) theory of translation shifts, which distinguishes between level shift and category shift. The category shift are further classified into structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. Data were gathered using documentation techniques and analyzed through the lens of Catford’s theoretical framework. The analysis uncovered a total of 407 instances of translation shifts: 28 were identified as level shifts, while the remaining 379 fell under category shifts, broken down into 175 unit shifts, 116 structure shifts, 67 intra-system shifts, and 21 class shifts. These shifts primarily occurred due to grammatical and structural differences between the SL (English) and the TL (Indonesian), along with the need to adjust meaning to ensure that the message remains natural and culturally appropriate for the target audience. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the field of translation studies, particularly in deepening the understanding of how translation shifts function within the context of film subtitling
Diaz Kurniawati, Sigit Haryanto

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1328

This study aims to know how blended learning implemented in a university speaking class. The learning model combines Canva Learning Management System (LMS) with face-to-face meetings. The research used a qualitative method and involved 20 university students. Data were collected through interviews to understand students' opinions, experiences, and problems during the course. The results show that Canva LMS helped students to access learning materials easily. The materials were interesting and helped them practice speaking at home. Students said the LMS made learning more flexible and allowed them to study at their own pace. However, face-to-face classes were still very important. Students felt that speaking directly in class, getting feedback from the teacher, and interacting with friends helped them improve more. Some problems were also found. Others were not motivated to study by themselves or had trouble using the LMS at first. Teachers should also give more group tasks so that students can work and speak with each other more. This research shows that blended learning using Canva LMS and face-to-face sessions can help improve students' speaking skills if used in the right way.
Sari Diana

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1317

This study examines how ChatGPT uses references to other literary works when interpreting classic poems and assesses its usefulness in teaching English literature to students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using a qualitative method called directed content analysis, the research analyzed ChatGPT’s responses to three well-known poems: Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Ozymandias. The analysis focused on four main areas: (1) identifying poetic elements like imagery, word choice, structure, and symbolism; (2) exploring connections to other texts through references, imitations, or changes; (3) evaluating how ChatGPT’s responses could help in EFL classrooms by providing interactive feedback and encouraging discussion; and (4) considering the limitations of ChatGPT’s interpretations. The findings show that ChatGPT effectively identifies key poetic features and draws meaningful connections to other literary works. Its responses can serve as helpful examples for close reading and support literature discussions in EFL settings, aiding students in developing critical thinking and expanding their literary vocabulary. However, ChatGPT often presents a single, fixed interpretation, highlighting the need for teachers to guide students toward considering multiple perspectives. In conclusion, ChatGPT has significant potential as a teaching tool for EFL literature classes, especially in supporting the analysis of literary connections, provided that educators facilitate critical discussions and encourage diverse interpretations.
Fina Muhimah

This study aims to compare the quality of sarcasm translations produced by artificial intelligence (AI)-based translator applications to comedy scripts written by a script writer and performed by Val Resa in the Meet Nite Live program on Metro TV. The main focus lies on the ability of AI to capture the nuances of irony, subtle sarcasm, and cultural contextual meanings, which are the characteristics of sarcasm. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a comparative analysis technique on the translation results of several popular AI applications such as Google Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT. The results of the study show that most AI applications have difficulty in translating sarcasm accurately, especially when the humour relies on local cultural context, wordplay, and emotional intonation. Some translations actually become literal and lose the desired rhetorical effect. Thus, this study highlights the limitations of AI translators in handling sarcastic humor and suggests the need for human intervention or deeper cultural context-based training to improve translation accuracy.
Ika Oktaria Cahyaningrum

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1308

The fast growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has greatly changed how education works, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study looks at how students' use of AI tools for learning languages changed before and after the pandemic. Using a research method that focuses on numbers, information was collected through questionnaires given to 15 students in Purwokerto. The results showed that before the pandemic, 86.7% of students had used AI tools, with 73.3% using translation tools and 20% using grammar checkers. However, this use was still supplementary. After the pandemic, usage increased to 93.3%. There was a significant increase in the use of advanced tools such as ChatGPT (60%), Grammarly (53.3%), QuillBot (46.7%), and Google Translate (73.3%). As many as 53.3% of those questioned felt they were becoming more dependent on AI, and 66.7% believed AI helped them learn on their own. However, 20% felt that this dependence actually interfered with their ability to learn independently. This study shows that the pandemic has changed the use of AI (artificial intelligence) from being just a tool to an essential part of learning. If not used wisely, this can result in a decline in critical thinking skills and independence. This reliance raises worries about how well students think and whether they are being honest in their studies. The results highlight how important it is to use AI in a way that helps learners improve their language skills instead of taking over that process and gave big impact on the students’ dependency in learning language.
Meliana Nur Eka Putri, Nawal Zoghby Wijaya

https://proceedings.uinsaizu.ac.id/index.php/celti/article/view/1337

This study aims to examine the character transformation of the main character in the film Budi Pekerti (2023) through Tzvetan Todorov's structural narrative approach and the concept of personality in Islamic psychology (nafs). The study was conducted using an interpretive qualitative method based on multimodal discourse analysis, emphasizing the relationship between changes in narrative flow, visual symbolism, and the inner dynamics of the main character, Bu Prani. The results of the study show that the character's journey follows Todorov's five-stage pattern—from equilibrium to new equilibrium—which reflects the process of spiritualization of the soul from nafs ammarah to nafs muṭma'innah. The semiotic and linguistic approaches also reveal the depth of emotional expression and inner control in dealing with a reputation crisis due to cyberbullying. This study shows that film narrative can be an educational medium that represents the process of psychological healing and ethical resilience in the digital era.
A’yuna Dzil Ma’unah, Devi Lusiana Putri, Muhammad Faliq Mubarrok Ilmi
