Abstract

Student focus plays a crucial role in successful learning, but many junior high school students have difficulty maintaining attention during classroom activities. Effective classroom management is therefore essential in creating a supportive learning environment to improve student engagement and concentration. This study aims to explore the classroom management practices of English teachers in maintaining student focus in the eighth grade at SMP Kristen Purwokerto. A qualitative case study design was used in this research. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with an English teacher, and documentation. Data were analyzed using qualitative procedures, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that teachers implement various classroom management practices, including classroom physical design, rules and routines, teacher-student relationships, engaging and motivating teaching, discipline strategies, voice and body language, unplanned teaching, teaching under cicrcumstances, and teacher roles and teching styles. These practices contributed to maintaining students’ focus during English learning activities, although some aspects still require improvement to better align with curriculum objectives. The study concludes that effective classroom management plays a significant role in sustaining students’ focus in English language learning at the junior high school level.
